Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes says that the club will not be signing a player of the Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo calibre even if they spend £ 100 million on Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba.

The Frenchman came through the ranks at United before leaving on a free transfer for Juventus a few years ago. He has since progressed into one of the best midfielders in the world, and transfer rumours about an impending departure have grown in recent years. This summer, however, seems to be the time that he decides to leave Juventus for an even bigger club.

The arrival of Jose Mourinho has coincided with yet another summer spending spree at United. Their prized asset so far has been the free transfer of Zlatan Ibrahimovic. One of the reasons behind spending almost nothing so far is the need to splash big on a player like Pogba. Scholes, though, says that Pogba is not yet the finished product and it will take time for him to reach the level of Messi and Ronaldo. United enjoyed immense success with a Ronaldo but he was signed for a snip at £ 18 million. The figure being talked about for Pogba is on a different dimension altogether.

Scholes says that if the club is looking to spend £ 100 million on a player, he has to score at least 50 goals in a season."He was a very talented player, I played with him quite a lot. If you ask me, at that time his agent was asking for a lot of money for a player who did not play first-team football except once or twice.Okay, he has gone on to great things and there was a massive improvement in him. But for that money you would need a player who scores 50-plus goals a season, like Ronaldo or Messi,” said Scholes.
