SPAIN WIN

Spain defeated Georgia by 2-0 in their final World Cup qualifying game played at Albacete on Tuesday and with that, they made sure that they would be going to Brazil next year to defend their World Cup title.

La Roja ended at top position in their group with 20 points in 8 matches. France which was the other strong side in that group finished at no. 2 with 17 points.

Tuesday’s game was pretty special for Spain’s star midfielder Andres Iniesta as he was playing in his hometown. A huge amount of people had turned up to watch him play and when he walked onto the ground, he was given a standing ovation.

It would certainly have been a very emotional moment for Iniesta, but, he didn’t let the emotions get better of him. He rose to the occasion and with another superb outing, he guided Spain to the finals.

Iniesta set up the first goal for his team in the 26th minute of the game and Alvaro Negredo finished it in style. Later on, in the second half, Juan Mata added one more and extended Spain’s lead to 2-0.

Georgia which was playing pretty defensively right from the outset never looked like wiping out the deficit. They seemed to have given it up towards the end.

Talking to the reporters after the game, Iniesta said, “It was certainly an emotional night for me. My friends, my family members, everybody had come to watch the game and I am glad that we secured our qualification. There could not have been a better venue to do it.”

Spain had gone into the match against Georgia without a couple of its vital players i.e. David Silva and Cesc Fabregas. Despite that, they won comfortably and that shows the depth in their squad.
