There is quite some excitement among Barcelona fans following the confirmation that their superstar attacker Lionel Messi would finally be signing a new contract at the club.
Messi's future was very much up in the air in the last couple of months as he continued to drop major hints that he wanted to leave the Camp Nou and try out another challenge in some other club.
The Argentine star revealed some months ago that he wanted to leave the club because he was already fed up with always being used as a scapegoat whenever the team performed badly, especially on the pitch. However, the club decided against him leaving because of how much of an important player he is to them.
During the saga, former Barca president Josep Bartomeu had to resign because he was one of the problems the club had and his resigning was a big hope that Messi would choose to stay put. The new president Joan Laporta then came into the club and made a huge promise that he would work to ensure that Messi stays at the club and signs a new contract no matter hard it would be. The new president started making sure that he would keep his promise as he continued giving updates on the Messi contract situation, often saying that works were going on underground so the deal could be completed.
Messi has now agreed to sign a new contract extension with the Catalan giants and one of those who said they were sure he was going to stay, his former teammate Andres Iniesta, has now stated that he always knew the attacker would choose to renew his deal.
Iniesta says Messi is Barcelona through and through and it would have been very odd of him to sign for another club this summer. The former Barca midfielder then hailed Messi, stating that he showed huge courage by accepting a 50% pay-cut to sign a new contract.
