Andres Iniesta has surprised everyone by stating that he feels that manager Gerardo Martino is the right fit for Barcelona despite rumours that he is set to depart at the end of the season after a very poor campaign. After winning the league title last season under Tito Vilanova, Barcelona were expected to push on to new heights under Martino. The Argentine was reportedly appointed after recommendation from Lionel Messi, but things have not gone the same way as he would have hoped.
Not only have Barcelona struggled heavily in the league, but they are also looking like finishing the season empty-handed. They have already been defeated by arch rivals Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey, while they went out of the Champions League at the quarter-final stage for the first time in eight years. The club will be going into the final match of the season against Athletico still with a chance to win the league title, but they need to defeat Diego Simeone’s team for the first time this season if they are to do it. Ahead of the match, Iniesta has tried to reduce the pressure on Martino by saying that he’s the right man for the job.
Martino himself has admitted that his future remains uncertain after a poor season.
"For me, the coach that we have now is the best. Also, I would be delighted if he stayed here for longer and showed everyone what he can do. The first year is a difficult one for everyone. I have always seen him with the desire and determination needed. He always believes in our chances. Things don’t always go how you want them to, but you have to try. The world of Barcelona is always difficult, not just for him,” said the midfielder about the manager.
